In the wake of the global pandemic, my life took an unexpected turn, leading to the creation of The DIY Dad. The story of how I embarked on this new journey is a humble one, but it’s a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of learning from one’s own mistakes.
Before the pandemic, I was deeply entrenched in the wedding industry, but almost overnight, my business took a severe hit. The financial crunch combined with the ever-rising cost of living meant that my income dwindled significantly. Faced with such a challenging scenario, I was determined not to succumb to the same fate that many others in the industry were facing.
So, I decided to pivot and explore new opportunities. Leveraging my background as a web developer, I ventured into various online business ideas. However, I faced numerous setbacks, and disappointment began to set in. But as I’ve learned from experience, hitting rock bottom often becomes the catalyst for change.
In one of those moments of self-reflection, I felt the need for a constructive distraction. I headed to my workshop, surrounded by stacks of reclaimed wood that had been collecting dust. It was during this time that my wife, ever the voice of reason, suggested something that seemed so obvious in hindsight: “Why don’t you work as a handyman?”
The idea took me by surprise. I’d never considered myself exceptionally skilled in DIY. Growing up with my father, a trained army carpenter, I had always assumed that most people could handle basic DIY tasks. It turns out I was wrong.
I discovered that various factors prevented people from tackling what I had considered straightforward tasks, such as hanging pictures, mounting TVs, or applying sealant around a bath. Some lacked the physical mobility, while others simply lacked the confidence to venture into uncharted territory. I realised that the key to success in DIY isn’t just about avoiding mistakes but also having the knowledge and skills to rectify them when they inevitably occur.
With this newfound insight, I decided to offer my help to those who needed a guiding hand around their homes. Since that day, I’ve undertaken a wide range of projects, from hanging pictures to mounting bathroom fixtures, replacing decks, and fitting blinds.
One essential aspect of my approach is my commitment to fixing problems rather than simply replacing items. If you have a sliding wardrobe that’s not working quite right or a window latch that’s sticking, I’m always ready to assess the situation and see if I can revive it before recommending a costly replacement.
The DIY Dad isn’t just a handyman; it’s a journey of personal growth, a dedication to helping others, and a celebration of learning from mistakes. So, if you find yourself in need of a helping hand around the house, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here to make your life easier, one project at a time.
