Today has been a rare dry day in Reading so I have taken the time to start the refurbishment of my kitchen. The aim of this project is to give the kitchen a whole new look for as cheaply as possible, so far I’ve only spent £42!
You’ll see I’ve gone for a shaker style, which is dead simple to create with a little patience! I’ve used 5.5mm thick plywood cut into 80mm wide strips to create the boarder of each cupboard face. Taking your time to sneak up on each cut between the upright strips helps to provide a nice snug fit.
Normally I would spend loads of time using wood glue and clamps, but I recently got the advice of a cabinet maker who simply said that mitre bond (2 part CA/super glue) would do more than good enough… He’s right! The bond on these cabinets is strong enough that each strip can take the weight of the door hanging off of it without any concern.
I still have to figure out my plan for the draws, not 100% sure if I will be shakering them or not, the top one clearly isn’t big enough for it so I still have some considerations to make. Once I have finished the rest of the kitchen (I’m about half way there) the next step will be to use filler and corking to create seamless joins between the front frames and the door itself.
Check back soon to see how I’m getting on!
